Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger was born on January 26th, 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. While Kruger attended Syracuse university, she left after one year following her father’s passing. Afterwards, she attended Parsons School of Design in New York City to take art and design classes that would challenge her. She is know to be an American conceptual artist, as well as a collagist. Kruger uses her art to portray her critiques of political, social and economic issues. Kruger highlights unexpected phrases with her typical red, black and white palette onto images she selects from magazines. These phrases are intended to make her audience rethink elements of modern life. One of my favorite Kruger pieces is Untitled (I Shop Therefore I Am) (1987). The piece reads, “I Shop Therefore I am.” Kruger created this piece to portray that almost everything that is presented in the media to resonate with women is actually just based on the assumptions that men have about women. This one in particular speaks to the fact that men believe that women love materialistic items and further, it presents the incorrect ideology that man can keep women wrapped around their fingers by swaying them with material items.
