Delita Martin

Delita Martin, Bearer, 2013

Delita Martin. Two As One, 2017

Delita Martin is an American artist whose works concentrate on the black female identity. Martin uses elaborate African textiles and colors to portray many faces of black women, masked and unmasked. Each piece of her artwork conveys a story that connects back to Africa in which the audience gets a glimpse of the black woman in her true form. This identity encompasses unity and compassion. By incorporating and combining African symbols, self-portraits, and family photographs, Martin fuses past and present identities of black women and reinvents them.  Her paintings confront the ideas of racism, sexism, and gender identity and how, like her artwork,  they are connected and yield the same amount of recognition.
