Concentrating on contemporary artists, choose 5 women artists to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history. You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post MUST include artists working today. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research.

Please reference Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center and the Brooklyn Museum if you visited.

Writing assignment for up to 5pts if you visit the Brooklyn Museum on your own
Due 12/4 at 11pm
If you were unable to attend the Brooklyn Museum with the class on Sunday but can still make the trip you can receive up to 5pts of credit. You must visit Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party at the Brooklyn Museum. Read all of the supporting materials in the exhibition and browse the information on the small interactive tablet outside the installation. Spend some time in The Dinner Party paying close attention to the details of the place settings, note the names and techniques, the imagery and patterns. Choose a few of your favorite place settings. Note how many names might be familiar to you. Write 3+ paragraphs about your experience with The Dinner Party. Include names, details, techniques and your own reactions.

Check out the other exhibitions next to the Dinner Party gallery in the Sackler Center. Visit at least one other gallery/floor in the museum! Include a few details about that as well in your post.

Class trip to the Brooklyn Museum

Saturday, November 17 at 1pm We will meet in the glass lobby of the museum near the main entrance door at least 10 minutes BEFORE 1pm. Buy your ticket as soon as you arrive. Remember general admission to the museum is a suggested donation. We will assemble here and I will be leading all of us upstairs to see the Dinner Party all together. I will walk you through the installation and explain as much as I can about it and you will all have time to experience the installation for yourselves. you will then be able to visit any part of the museum after we are done. I highly recommend staying and seeing other galleries!

Give yourself extra time for traveling on the weekend. Directions to the Brooklyn Museum can be found here. There is street parking near the museum if you drive there. Careful to read street regulation signs carefully. There is also a parking lot at the museum where you can pay to park. Speak to other students about car pooling together or traveling together. Please feel free to invite a guest. *Please let me know if you plan on coming to the museum and if you plan on bringing a guest by signing a sheet in class on 11/15.

Modernism/Postmodernism

What is modernism? How did women artists in Europe influence the techniques and development of modernism and the movements of abstraction, german expressionism, dada and surrealism and other movements in modernism? What important circumstances aided these and how were women integral in applying the techniques of design and craft in these new approaches to art?

Compare and contrast these with postmodernism. What is postmodernism? How have women artists been instrumental in the development of its main themes? Please include examples of each of the movements within modernism and examples of postmodern art. Explain the specifics of these new approaches to art and art-making in the 20C.

~1000 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least five images (examples) and two links.

What were the expected roles of women in Europe in the Middle Ages? How did roles for women change throughout the Renaissance and into the 19C? Please explain how these roles influenced the lives of women artists and the subjects of their work. Citing references to the readings, please use examples through the 19C to illustrate the challenges women artists faced. How did they overcome these or reference them in their work?

We will be attending a lecture by artist Maren Hassinger at 11:30am.

Maren Hassinger was born in Los Angeles in 1947. After studying dance and sculpture at Bennington College, she completed her MFA in Fiber Structure at UCLA. While in Los Angeles, she began making sculptures with bent, twisted and frayed wire rope and creating and participating in numerous performances in Los Angeles.

Now based in New York City, Hassinger uses every day disposable and recycled materials—plastic bags, paper, and cardboard—to consider our relationship to nature and each other. We live in a time of inequality and vanishing resources, so Hassinger considers the precarious fate of people and nature. These issues inspire her work, which includes video, performance, installation, and objects.

Hassinger has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. She is the recipient of many awards and honors including grants from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Gottlieb Foundation, Anonymous was a Woman, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Caucus for the Arts. Since 1997, she has been Director of Rinehart School of Graduate Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

In 2015, she had a major retrospective at Spelman College Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia with a catalogue featuring 20 works that were recreated for the exhibition. In 2016, she and her daughter Ava Hassinger presented an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia as “Matriarch”. Hassinger’s work was included in a major exhibition of feminist artwork at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2017. In 2018, Hassinger will participate in 3 solo exhibitions at Art & Practice in Los Angeles, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Susan Inglett Gallery in New York. Maren's yearlong outdoor exhibition with the Studio Museum in Harlem, titled "Monuments" is currently on view in Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park. Maren Hassinger lives and works in New York, New York.

Please answer the following questions based on the readings and class discussion. Use your own experiences and realizations to help illustrate your understanding of the material. You must cite from the readings in order to explain and analyze the arguments made in the readings. What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples. How have you come to understand these structures and in what ways has this understanding changed your views about various art and media examples and of your own identity and role in these structures?

What contemporary arguments can you find that have sprung from these?
Ex: female gaze, oppositional gaze, intersectional feminism. Please expand this analysis into areas of art, art history, cinema and film theory, media criticism, intersectional feminism and sociology.
