Portuguese visual artist, Paula Rego, bases most of her paintings and prints off of folk and fairytales, literature, and Christian mythology. Rego also uses her own childhood experiences, memories, fantasies and fears to create her pieces. While her art often portrays cruel and obscure scenes, it has a much deeper and powerful message. It is through her art that she is able to depict dysfunctional family relationships, political systems and societal structures while putting women and girls at the forefront of her pieces. Rego's work stands out to me because of the way she portrays women. In her pieces, women are not meek, submissive or objectified. Rather, they are dominant, multifaceted and are not afraid to show their sexuality. Through her work women are not used to appeal to the male gaze, instead they are progressive and powerful, which I think is something that all women can appreciate.
