Ellen Gallagher and Black Authenticity

Ellen Gallagher, born 1965 in Providence, Rhode Island, is a contemporary female artist who has been known for bringing light to micro-regressions and African American stereotypes. Uniquely, she uses a technique that not many use today. Most of her art pieces include some form of layering and the use of magazines. One of the pieces that I found the most interesting was her "DeLuxe" series. In this series, Gallagher focuses on the stereotypes that the African American community encounter in terms of their hair and how media has worked on whitewashing the black woman. She uses magazines and newspapers with black women but cuts out important features such as their hair and eyes to show that women of color are beautiful the way they are. Overall, Gallagher proves to be a prominent artist of today and her art will leave messages that will speak to many in the future as she continues to have exhibitions in big museums such as MoMA in New York City. It is important that we have artists like Ellen Gallagher in the times of today.
