Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania on May 22, 1844. Her family moved from Paris to France when Cassatt was the age of seven, and she spent five years in Europe where she took private art lessons and studied painting. Becoming an artist was hard for woman in the 19th century, as society had a different view of the role of women. They were discouraged in pursuing a career and were mostly viewed as housewives, which is why her parents strongly objected her becoming an artist. Mary Cassatt is known as one of the most influential female artists because of what she had to overcome. She had to win her parents over and had to constantly hear men criticize her for wanting to become an artist. Mary Cassatt was the only American female artist, and one of three female artists, to be linked with Impressionism. She helped introduce European art in the U.S by being an extremely useful advisor. Mary Cassatt helped change the way people looked at art, and even helped change how some men looked at women.
