Group 4 Presentation

Impressionism is a style or movement in painting originating in France in the 1860s, characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color. An impressionist artist our group wanted to acknowledge is Van Gogh. Gogh was a well-known impression artist whom color was known to symbolize expression. Gogh was born in Groot- Zundert, Hooland on March 30, 1853.

  • Van Gogh painted a "Starry" in 1889 from a room in the mental asylum at Saint-Remy. It depicts his interpretation of the view of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Gogn is looking down at the village from a viewpoint that is imaginary and saw emotions in his subject and translated that onto the canva. In this painting you can see his approach is particularly evident in the sky, which is composed of a thickly applied tonal collection of blue and gold hues, they way he does his brushstrokes, and his focus on luminescence

Another impressionist artist our group chose was French Impressionist artist Marie Bracquemond. Bracquemond was largely self taught and spent a lot of her time with painter Auguste Vassort Bracquemond was describe by Henri Follon (french Art Historian) as one of “"les trois grandes dames” of the impressionism. She came from a unstable upbring; her father died shortly after her birth & mother moved around from place to place before settling in Paris. Married to Félix Bracquemond, who had an art career of his, he helped influence Marie’s art but resented her work and success. In the photo on the left Bracquemond represented her sister, Louise. Attired in white which represent purity and is looking directly at the book in the garden makes the viewer feel at easy. The image depicts light brush strokes, and strong sunlight which adds to the relaxing mood of the picture.

Lastly Berthe Morisot was born in Bourges, France, in 1841. She came from a well off family and developed her artistic talents at a young age. She was a member of the circle of painters in paris who were called the "impressionist". She was also knowns as "les trois grandes dames" with Marie Bracquemond. The subjects to her artwork were personal and drawn from her life. Morisot portrayed a variety of subjects from landscapes, still lifes, domestic scenes, and portraits. She commanded the feminine charm with her art. The pictures to the left and right are examples of the work she depicted.
